Even the Waves Obey

As I sit on the shore, observing the waves dance upon the sand. The tide races to the edge of its boundaries attempting to resist, but in the end, abides.

The wet sand swallows my chair inch by inch as the saltwater eagerly emerged onto the shore. The sand clings between my toes as the surf glide to a stop. Who gave waves strict instruction to go no further?

God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let the dry land appear.” and it was so.          – Genesis 1: 9 (NIV)

God commanded the formless, shapeless, free moving sea to remain in its boundary, and it obeyed! Obedience is not something I do very well. Sadly, it takes a lot of trial and error before submitting to authority. As I soak listening to roaring waves, a thought occurs, “If the ocean respects God’s authority, then shouldn’t I.”

God deserves my obedience, and when I obey, the ripple effect forms an opportunity for new land to appear, just like the sea. Dryland emerged as water obeyed God birthing an abundant variety for life.

God has good plans for us. But waits to reveal those plans until we surrender to His commands. So what do I need to relinquish before moving forward?

CONTROL! The need to control everything is a warning sign for lack of trust. My need to dictate what happens, when it happens, and how it happens stems from the inability to trust others to follow through, including myself.  But when it comes to God, He is not like man. He has already proven He is trustworthy and reliable.

So how do I let go of my control? I’m still working on that.

However, the more I personally learn about God, the easier it is for me to obey Him. For three years now, I’ve carved out at least 15 minutes a day to:

  • Prayer
  • Reading God’s Word
  • Praise.

This trio guides my dates with God. I’m invited on a date each morning by God. A date is a one on one intentional opportunity to get to know someone on a deeper level.  Our dates increase our level of intimacy, anchoring my trust in Him.

Creation knows its Maker, and so it obeys. For us to choose to obey, we must do the same and know our Marker.

What are some ways you’ve learned to obey and abide in Christ? What has helped build your trust in Him?

  1. Living life with Him one day at a time. Yes, it takes time to learn to completely TRUST in HIM, but He is the only one that is worthy or trustworthy to trust completely. He has told me over and over, “come walk with Me.” I have so much more for you to enjoy in your life IF ONLY you will trust Me and walk with ME. I love my LORD AND SAVIOR and love walking with HIM each and every day. Take HIS hand and walk in the security of His hands.

  2. God Himself has proved Himself to be trustworthy as He carries out His promise to never leave or forsake me, even when I am not the best I can be. He is faithful to protect and provide and the more I trust and lean on Him the closer our relationship is.

  3. “Creation knows its maker…” you are so right! Great insight, friend. My trust has also increased over time, as God has proved faithful. The refrain from an old hymn comes to mind, “The longer I walk with Him the sweeter He grows.”

    1. Amen, your so right, our family hangs Ebenezers on our walls to remind us of His faithfulness. Recalling God’s faithfulness strengthens our confidence in God to be God. Thank you so much for sharing.
