Blessed are…

When we think of being blessed, do we envision persecution, poverty, or grief? Those situations erect pain, not a blessing, at least that’s the world’s view. However, when defining blessing from a spiritual perspective, suffering is anticipated but briefly when looking at an eternal lifeline. A friend said, “We are not a period signifying the end but a dash that continues forever.”

Why is blessing coupled with suffering?

First, because God flips everything on its head. “First will be last, and the last will be first.”  _ Matthew 20:16

Where is the blessing in suffering? It’s found in Matthew 5.

Let’s look at Matthew 5: 3-12

Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,

    for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

    for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,

    for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way, they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Each of these shows a blessing birthed through suffering. And the blessing received isn’t a tangible item but a richer, personal reliance on God kind of faith. We grow closer to God when we face a trial of some sort because we realize our limitations expose our need for Him.

I don’t enjoy hardships or trials in the moment, but I appreciate the results.  James 1:2-4 reminds us to Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Sweet Friend, I’m not sure what you’re facing today. But the power of our God can take challenging trails that stir all kinds of fears, frustrations, and desperate seeking and flip it on its head and resurrect peace. May I encourage you… Stay Strong!  God sees you. Trust there is a purpose in this madness. God has a plan, and it is for your good. Trust Him to show you His POWER and MIGHT. Consider this thing you’re facing to be a part of your training for something much greater.
