Scripture of the Day:  Matthew 18:4

“Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

The disciples’ jockeying for position asks, “Who will be the greatest in heaven.”  Jesus responds by pointing to a child.  The illustration signifies our dependency on God.  The description Jesus uses for the child is “lowly,” meaning humble, free of pride.  Pride stops us all from experiencing the fullness of God.

A child at age three starts craving their independence.  Their favorite phrase is “I do it.”  The dilemma is they can’t always “do it.”  They need help to complete their tasks.  Reluctantly, the child will ask for help, make a mess, or the time no longer permits them to try, and the parent will need to step in.  With the parent’s guidance and support, the pair will complete the task.   Because the parent has proven to be good and trustworthy, most of the time, the child will accept their parent’s help.

Our Father in Heaven is good.  He allows us to try on our own.  He waits patiently for us to acknowledge our need for His help.  After we yield our “I do it” mentality, He is faithful to step in.  So, what took us so long to ask for His help?

Recently a pastor defined trust as obedience without premises, following through no matter what the outcome might be.  He asked, “Do we believe God’s choice for our life is always best for us?”

I ponder this question, I admit there are times I fear His choice for my life.  But time and time again, the Lord has proven to me He is faithful and trustworthy. The more we trust, the more we see with our own eyes, He is reliable and always good.  Faith like a child will have us run into our Daddy’s arms, trusting He knows what’s best for you and for me.
